MCP Review: 2017 KTM Duke 690

$

2 decades ago, the original KTM Duke was nothing short of revolutionary. First single cylinder street bike into a cult classic, adding extreme fun to a raw and radical concept. In 2017, the fully revised Duke 690 stays faithful to its ancestor’s way, but the impressive smoothness, electronics, and improve ergonomics and good power boost over the last year model.

The first thing you notice on the Duke 690 is the aggressive design.  Sharp lines and edges are a staple of the duke design and this model delivers.  An almost sport bike look belies an extremely ergonomic riding stance.  Back and arm angles aren’t as pronounced giving you a relaxed but “ready for anything” feel.  City traffic becomes easier to manage with a seat height which is just below 33 inches.  Starts and stops as well as the snails paced crawl of vehicles are easy to match.  The Duke 690 engine does get a bit hot in traffic so mind what you wear.

The comfortable seat gives the Duke 690 a respectable score in sport touring.  It performs flawlessly in lazy provincial back roads as well as in the fast corners of the North’s mountain passes.  The lively 73 hp LC4 engine is so easy to control you would almost forget you are riding one of the strongest single cylinder bikes in the world.  At high speeds, the roar of the exhaust note is something you will not soon forget.  Of course, keeping everything under control is the disengageable ABS and the programmable traction control, which, anyone who has ridden in the Philippines will readily agree, is a necessity.

One of the highlights of this year’s model is the TFT instrument panel.  A clean and elegant display with all the vital information well placed and easy to distinguish on the bright display, sun glare sometimes becomes an issue at certain times of the day but you really shouldn’t be looking down that often anyway.

During the recently concluded Breakfast Ride 5 in Baguio, the Duke was in its element from easy city riding to  fast highway stretches.  The 14 liter tank averaged around 200 kilometers which included heavy traffic and high speed runs so better fuel economy can be achieved with sensible riding, which is hard to do on this fun machine.

Simplicity and power, these two words describe the 2017 KTM Duke 690 perfectly.

The KTM Duke 69o is available at KTM BGC and is priced at Php 635,000.  The R model is available for Php 720,000

Now on its second consecutive year, Yamaha Motor Philippines Inc. participated in this festive event right in the heart of the motorcycle capital of Metro Manila, 10th Ave., Caloocan City. With an enormous crowd in attendance, Yamaha Motor Philippines Inc. had lots of activities prepared to entertain and keep the participants busy.

Yamaha Safety Riding Science with its very competitive instructors opened its gates to those who would like to learn how to ride a motorcycle for free. Using the Yamaha Mio 125 scooters, the attendees got the lessons they came for. After completing the riding course, each participant is given a certificate from the Yamaha Safety Riding Science not to mention a cool Yamaha t-shirt that they received upon signing up for the riding clinic.

Riding skills competitions were also held in the venue starting with the Moto Gymkhana. Using the Yamaha TFX 150, the contestants from different parts of the country showcased their skills as they try to overcome a very challenging course. Next was the group stunt riding competition which was participated in by four (4) groups. Non-stop wheelies, burnouts and end-os for 5 minutes as each group electrified the crowd with their death-defying stunts. In the end, it was the reigning champions Taytay Stunt Team who took home the trophy.

Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc. also displayed their motorcycles for the public to see graced by the gorgeous Yamaha Ladies. Different games like puzzles and nerf gun shooting were also set up to entertain the ever growing crowd. More and more people arrived as the sun starts to set in preparation for the concert later that day.

The awarding of the winners and champions for the Moto Gymkhana and Stunt Riding Competition preceded the concert with celebrity Rico Robles as the emcee. Trophies were handed over as the night drew closer which means the highlight of the show is about to begin. The mini concert set off with the newest acoustic pop artist, TJ Monterde. TJ received a very loud welcome from the ladies in the crowd. TJ returned the favor by inviting one of his lady fans on the stage to be serenaded by him.

The crowd was lulled by the voice of TJ Monterde but is still growing restless waiting for another OPM Rock icon to be on center stage. After an amazing performance by TJ, the crowed entered a different atmosphere, as the sound of the drums and the guitars with a familiar song everyone went crazy as Bamboo steps up on stage. Performing a number of his hit songs, the crowd just can’t help but to sing along.

It was quite a festive day and night for the Motorsiklo Arangkada 2017 in Caloocan having Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc. for the second consecutive year.

Congratulations to Motorsiklo Arangkada 2017 and to Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc.

Yamaha Team Pilipinas had one goal in mind when they left for their National duties, showcase Philippine racing prowess in the ACRR(Asia Cup Road Racing). The racing series is an annual competition that is organized by FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) Asia; where countries such as ours, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, India, and Sri Lanka participate. Local Motorcycle governing bodies of each country send their national riders to compete in the international meet. Now after all the hard work and training, hours spent on the track with precious moments spent away from their loved ones; it all paid off for our riders.

The journey started in Thailand on the tracks of Nakhonchaisri. The country known for the opulence of its royal palaces and temples was no paradise for the riders because they knew the competition will show them no quarter. The duo of Durraine Dan Carlos and Garry Caneda Jr. showed their composure with precision and determination throughout the competition. In the end, their place among the peers was sealed as they were named overall Champions.

After securing the win in Thailand, it was up to Masato Fernando, Vingie Coloma, and Ephraim Onahon to continue the streak. The pressure was on when they arrived at the Penbay International Circuit in Taiwan where their foes were ready to do battle. It was a tough race, especially when the local stars gave them all they could handle. But the Filipino riders pushed through adversity and punched a win, bringing home the Championship in the process.

These 2 wins for Yamaha Team Pilipinas prove to be pivotal for their bid to be named overall Champions of the series. Now the quest continues for our riders to carry the flag across the global finish line. – YMPH
